The role of aerosol particles in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection

Since the beginning of the pandemic, when airborne transmission was not yet recognised as a major route of infection transmission, scientists have gained much new evidence that now clearly shows that COVID-19 infections can transmitted to a significant extent via airborne aerosols that remain suspended in indoor air for a substantial period of time.

The Society for Aerosol Research (GAeF) recently published a Position Paper on this topic. The "Position Paper on Understanding the Role of Aerosol Particles in SARS-CoV-2 Infection" provides some very useful insight and guidance on the transmission dynamics of the coronavirus. As can be seen on the GAeF website leading scientists, researchers, epidemiologists, infection control and aerosol experts and environmental health institutes worldwide support this position paper.

Chapter 5 of the publication also explains, the important role that good air purifiers can play in reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection transmission indoors, which requirements an air purifier must fulfil to achieve an effective reduction of virus concentrations, which specifications are nonsensical and reduce an air purifiers effectiveness (e.g. the use of H14 filters) and which technologies can be unreliable or even harmful (e.g. UV light and ozone).

Especially in indoor spaces that cannot be ventilated effectively or in which the gathering of people is unavoidable (e.g. open-plan offices, restaurants, classrooms, conference rooms and waiting rooms), the use of IQAir high-performance air purifiers offers the possibility of minimising virus concentrations by repeatedly circulating the room air through the air purifier's highly efficient filter media. This was recently confirmed by an independent European test laboratory:....

  • AIRMID STUDY: The accredited laboratory Airmid Healthgroup from Ireland tested various IQAir air purifier models in a standardised test procedure and confirmed a reduction of airborne viruses of over 99.9% in an almost 30 m3 room within only 10 minutes. Within this time the virus concentration was reduced below the detection limit. The test was performed with real H1N1 influenza A viruses, which are the same size as the corona virus and are used as a safe surrogate for SARS-CoV-2. The test certificate for the IQAir HealthPro 250 model is available upon request.

Because of their outstanding and certified performance, IQAir air purifiers have been used since the first SARS crisis broke out in Asia in 2002/2003, but fortunately did not gain a foothold in Europe. In Hong Kong alone, which was particularly hard hit by SARS at the time, HealthPro air purifiers were deployed in over 150 medical facilities and hospitals against SARS-CoV to reduce the risk of infection for staff and patients. Since the global outbreak of theCOVID pandemic, tens of thousands more IQAir air purifiers have been deployed in public healthcare facilities as well as medical and dental practices, offices, shops, retirement homes, hotels, restaurants and educational institutions to minimise the Covid-19 infection risk indoors.

We are proud that IQAir can make a valuable contribution to airborne infection control in a wide variety of indoor environments with the reliable and certified performance of its high-performance air purifiers. By reducing the risk of indoor infection transmission we believe that the deployment of IQAir can also assist an accelerated return to normality.
